We Have Arrived! (6/23/11)

We made it! Ben and I are finally living in the place we will call home (at least for a little while). We've spent the last 24 hours unloading our little car, cleaning the apartment, setting up the Internet, exploring our neighborhood and running some errands. Ben even found some pick-up basketball at a park just a few blocks from our house. This same park holds an Amish Farmer's Market twice a week. Seems like our perfect park.
UPS was supposed to drop off the truck holding our stuff today between 12 and 5. Comcast was supposed to come hook up Internet from 11 to 1. We called UPS this morning to confirm. Everything was good to go. We figured Comcast wouldn't show based on our previous experiences with them. But they showed up right on time, hooked us up and were quite pleasant. At 12:30 we called for an update on the truck. UPS proceeded to tell us they would not be dropping it off because we didn't arrange a drop off. What do you mean UPS, we just spoke with you a few hours ago. They called us liars. I sort of lost it. It's been a long week. Turns out someone didn't get a memo. Fortunately Ben held his cool and arranged for a drop off tomorrow morning. So we had wasted half the day waiting for the truck. To make ourselves feel better, we ran a few errands....IMG_0642 Nothing like dropping $100 on house supplies at Tarjay to brighten our mood (THANK you for the gift cards =).
But we weren't finished.  Can you guess where we went next? IMG_0644
No, not Sveden. Here's one more clue...

IKEA!! Nothing like several hours meandering through IKEA to feel like the world makes sense.
Here's a few "before" pictures of our apartment. Once we get everything all set up I'll show you what it looks like.

This is the front bedroom that we are going to use as a family room. Sort of looks like a San Francisco window, no?IMG_0624
Another shot of the family room.

Our kitchen. I don't think I would ever select this color of red on my own, but I really like it! Funny enough, these counters and cupboards are the same ones that were in our Millbrae house! Makes me feel at home in the kitchen. Can't wait for all my pots and tools to get here. IMG_0630
We are working on making this look nicer.

Here's our bedroom. We need to buy a bed. And we are taking suggestions.

So that's about it for now. We are just trying to stay cool both literally and figuratively. Overall people have been pretty friendly here (EXCEPT on the road, there they are ridiculous), they just seem wound a little tight at first.
In the next few days I'll try to post more about our thoughts on leaving Millbrae so stay tuned. For now I just want to say a huge THANK YOU for all the prayers. We had a couple of close calls on the road...including one time when a really rickety truck lost one of its plastic siding pieces. It flew off and hit the minivan in front of us, shattering into pieces (but not before creating a huge gash in the minivan's windshield) which then hit us. Thankfully the Yaris was not injured although I don't even want to think about the damage that plastic could have done if the minivan hadn't buffered the hit. Everyone in the minivan was fine. Anyway, thanks for encouraging us with your words and prayers. It's weird now that's it's kind of just the two of us (4 including the cats). We're having fun, growing closer, creating memories, living an adventure. But we really, really miss you.
Love,
Kristin
