Exploring the Amish Country (8/25/11)

A few Saturdays ago we ventured out to Amish Country. We tasted shoo fly pie, the local brews, and some local cheeses and butter. Ben tried to get into a theological conversation with an Amish man at a furniture store. I learned that "Pennsylvania Dutch" does not refer to people from Holland. The Amish actually came from Germany but "Deutsch" was translated to "Dutch". Go figure. While we were in a candle store a storm moved in and it became clear we had to wait it out. Fortunately we were right next door to a salsa/dip/chutney/pickle/etc. store that literally has a sample out of everything they sell. So we were able to wait out the storm sampling Lancaster County's finest dips. We will definitely go back to experience more of this cultural phenomenom although we'll try to stay further from the tourist centers.
